That is the Law
That is the Law (2019)
Video projection installation with sound.
Projected dimensions: 3,000 mm x 2,000mm.
I am less interested in the surface of things, and more drawn to the invisible or hidden. Photographing the invisible is a compelling challenge for a photographer. This poses the question - how does a photographer record the invisible?
Our animal is highly visible – we are physically animals, but we have cloaked our beast so effectively that we can only see ourselves as human. This video performance questions how society shapes our values, fears and human needs, and how these things manifest themselves in our desire to eschew our animalistic side. This work asks us to look at ourselves from another perspective. To embrace our animalism.
The title of the work comes from a quote in the HG Wells novel The Island of Dr Moreau (1896).
Not to go on all-fours; that is the Law. Are we not men?
Not to suck up Drink; that is the Law. Are we not men?
Not to eat Fish or Flesh; that is the Law. Are we not men?
Not to claw the Bark of Trees; that is the Law. Are we not men?
Not to chase other Men; that is the Law. Are we not men?
